It's time to get started on those New Year’s resolutions! And for many people, better health is on their to-do list. We believe that a healthy diet is step one towards a healthy lifestyle. So here are a few recommendations from our Downtown Roseville restaurants!
A Light Breakfast from Shady Coffee & Tea
Yogurt and Granola – Served with your choice of vanilla or strawberry yogurt, this breakfast option is high in fiber and protein. Yogurt also contains active cultures which help promote a healthy digestive system.
Oatmeal – A simple dish that is packed with fiber and other vitamins and minerals, it is a great complement to your morning coffee or tea!
An Avocado Explosion – Many items on Shady’s menu include avocado (such as their “Good Morning” bagel shown in the featured image of this article and their “Pesto Turkey Sandwich” shown below), which is considered a superfood for its many health benefits.

Veggie Options from The Monk’s Cellar
Green Salad – This vitamin-packed salad is made fresh with local mixed greens, grape tomatoes, radishes, and house-baked croutons. Add some chicken for extra protein or avocado, which is rich in heart-healthy potassium, among other vitamins and minerals. You have a few choices for dressing, but we recommend going light for the healthiest dish!
Caesar Salad – Our favorite, this Caesar Salad is made with crisp romaine lettuce, house-made Caesar dressing, fried capers, croutons, and parmesan cheese. You can also add grilled chicken as well and/or throw in some seafood such as white anchovies or shrimp for a robust, umami flavor. Both of these additions are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein.
Cobb Salad – Monk's takes the classic Cobb Salad and makes it special by adding their signature pickled red onions and radishes for an extra tangy, spicy taste. Radishes are a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C.

Sweet, Fruity, and Spicy at The Trax
Chicken Apple Gouda Flatbread – This sweet and savory dish features tender grilled chicken as protein, fresh crisp apples (good source of fiber and antioxidants), and Gouda cheese. It is finished with caramelized onions, arugula, and two dressings, which includes a zesty paprika crema and a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
Teriyaki Cauli Tacos – Also a great option for our vegetarian friends, these tacos use cauliflower instead of meat, which makes them lower in calories. Cauliflower also has the added benefits of reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. Green vegetables include arugula, green onions, and cilantro. You get sweet, savory, and spicy in this dish with the teriyaki sauce and sriracha aioli drizzle.

Grilled Chicken and Shrimp Tacos – Choosing grilled protein over fried options and soft-shell tacos over the crispy hard-shell variety makes the dish healthier due to less fat and oil from deep frying! With veggies added to the filling, you have a satisfying lunch or dinner option.
Grilled Seafood Plates – Tone down the carbs by skipping the side of rice and tortillas and go straight for the protein! A great option for those on a keto diet, the protein is served with a variety of vegetables.
