Downtown Roseville: A Seafood Lover's Paradise

Last Updated 10/15/2024Posted in Information, Businesses, & Events

Seafood has long captivated palates near and far, offering a robust array of flavors, textures, and culinary possibilities. From the delicate sweetness of fresh shrimp, to the rich, savory depth of grilled salmon, the ocean's bounty provides an endless source of inspiration for restaurant chefs and home cooks around the world.

Celebrate National Seafood Month in Downtown Roseville. Vernon Street is home to several acclaimed eateries that highlight the versatility of cuisine from the sea!

Goose Port Public House

Goose Port is known for their fusion dishes with a few Portuguese favorites thrown into the mix. And they have so much to offer when it comes to seafood! And the best part is, it is locally sourced!

Spicy Poke Nacho Platter - To start, this is a Goose Port dish we have tried and loved! It's made of raw tuna, serrano chilis, pineapple, green onion, served over crispy wonton chips, and topped with a triple threat of sauces-siracha aioli, wasabi soy, and sesame teriyaki.

Shrimp Ceviche - Next on the appetizer list is a shrimp ceviche that takes “refreshing” to the next level with a twist of lime over a classic blend of chilled shrimp, onion, serrano chilis, tomatoes, and cilantro. Traditionally, the seafood in a ceviche is marinated and cooked in citrus juices rather than cooked in heat! An interesting fact for those who were not aware!

Wild Cod Fish & Chips – A classic with English roots, fish & chips is featured in many restaurant menus. But what sets this one apart is the Blonde Ale tempura batter and house-made tartar sauce.

Crazed Crab Sandwich – 100% real crab salad (with mayo and red onions), cheddar cheese, and tomato inside toasted parmesan sourdough bread and a side of garlic fries. Need we say more?

Teriyaki Salmon Salad or Wrap – Whichever way you choose, this Asian-inspired dish is the real deal. Healthy and delicious, this features a fillet of fresh seared salmon with a teriyaki glaze. The side dish is a crisp romaine salad with sesame chili cucumbers, carrots, wakame (seaweed), red cabbage, and pickled onion.

The Monk’s Cellar

Celebrating their 10th anniversary this month (October 15th-19th), The Monk’s Cellar is an established part of Downtown Roseville as well as a local favorite. Their seafood goes by the same principle as everything else they offer. “Whenever possible we use local, fresh ingredients, avoiding frozen, and over processed options,” says co-owner, Paul Gould.

Here’s what’s on the menu:

Fresh Fish of the Day – On average, the fresh fish changes twice a week. Although the fish selection may repeat, the way it is prepared and it’s ingredients will likely never be the same. For example, this week they are serving “Grilled Swordfish with an orange teriyaki glaze on leek pomme puree,” but they will serve swordfish a whole different way the next time around. So, there’s always something new and exciting to try!

Fish & Chips – Starting with fresh fish, Monk’s Fish & Chips is unique in the way that the restaurant infuses its house-brewed English-style beer, Crooked Bridge ESB, into the batter, thereby paying homage to the award-winning craft beer they are known for. With a name as close to home as the beer itself, Gould explains that it was “named after the little bridge that goes over the train tracks in Old Town Roseville.” Served with house-made coleslaw and crispy duck fat fries, this dish is a winner!

Lobster Mac & Cheese – As part of their 10th-anniversary celebration, Monk’s will be serving a limited edition, elevated version of their Cellar Mac & Cheese. The dish features lobster, butter, green onions, and rotini pasta, in a cheddar cheese bechamel sauce. To finish, it is topped with breadcrumbs, paprika, parsley, & a lemon twist. All we can say is...yum!

Vernon Street Grill

This little cafe is a real gem in Downtown. Their decor is simple and unassuming, but the food speaks volumes. It’s the spot for a quick casual lunch with family and friends! Their new website is in progress and they are introducing new items to their menu!

Tuna Salad – Served over lettuce, onions, cucumbers, and tomatoes, this salad is 100% tuna-lover approved! The secret is in the perfect ratio of mayo and tuna. There’s minimal mayo in the mix so you can taste the shredded tuna fish. When served with Italian dressing, it adds the ideal amount of tang to this healthy lunchtime staple! The best part is, it’s also available as a sandwich for those bread-craving days!

California Rolls – Coming soon is this classic krab-filled sushi roll we cannot wait to try! We are excited this version is made with krab mix rather than krab sticks, which in our humble opinion, is the way California Rolls should be!

Taqueria Los Cantaritos

This taqueria (Spanish word for a restaurant that serves tacos) has one of the largest seafood selections we’ve ever seen from a Mexican restaurant. In addition to favorites such as fish and shrimp tacos, they also have a full seafood plate menu, all of which is served with rice, beans, salad, and tortillas! Below are some of our favorites.

Molcajete de Mariscos – There's something about this dish being served in a traditional hot volcanic stone bowl that makes it even more special. The medley of seafood is simmered with zesty vegetables and spices and garnished with lime and cilantro, creating a vibrant and flavorful experience that celebrates coastal Mexican cuisine.

Plato De Filete Empanizado – Breaded fish done Mexican style. Great for those days when you’re up for something extra hearty and filling.

Seafood Tostadas – Crispy corn tortillas topped with either shrimp, fish, or a mix of shrimp, fish, and octopus. These seafood dishes are budget-friendly, but big in flavor!

Daniello’s Restaurant

Trust Daniello’s to bring you a gastronomical experience that will delight your senses. The restaurant features an updated menu every month. And we see a wide selection of seafood dishes on October’s menu!

Lobster Arancini – A premium appetizer we don’t see too often, you must try it while you can! This features Maine lobster, guajillo chile truffle, and arborio rice balls that are breaded and deep-fried to perfection.

Prawn Sundae – An elevated version of a shrimp cocktail with Kiefer lime shrimp, grilled pineapple, coconut lime crema, and cabbage slaw.

Shigoku Oysters – Some say oysters are good year-round while others say they are best in months that have the letter “r” in the name. Whichever you believe, now is the time to savor these succulent oysters that are served with tomato and horseradish pearls.

Branzino – Not only is the taste out of this world, but the presentation of this whole fish dish is also a feast for the eyes. Cornbread, lemon dill butter, caper, pine nut compote, and gremolata are stuffed inside the branzino. As a result, the aromatic flavors are cooked into the grilled fish.

Frutti Di Mare Risotto – Black squid ink pasta, littleneck clams, prawns, mussels, and calamari are tossed together with lemon slices for the perfect blend of seafood goodness!

See Food – This dish is quite the looker. A component of the vibrant colors is purple gnocchi made from purple potatoes. The gnocchi are artfully served with diver scallops, salsify saffron soubise, and persillade foam.

8 oz Prime Filet Mignon with Lobster Tail – A dish of both land and sea, this classic combination of meats is ideal for a romantic dinner with your significant other. It is served with butter confit and French bordelaise sauce.

Hot Honey & Garlic Glazed Salmon – Just looking at the photo of this dish already makes us hungry! We are intrigued by the sweet and spicy combination of ingredients.

Creamy Garlic Tuscan Salmon with Spinach & Sun-Dried Tomatoes – This dish sounds so delectable with the creamy garlic sauce. It also sounds healthy with the side of veggies!

AVAILABLE BY REQUEST

Fried Rainbow Trout - Originally created for one of Randy Peters' wine pairing dinners, this dish turned out to be a huge hit ever since. It has been requested multiple times by customers and became so famous that it was mentioned in Roseville's State of the City. Executive Chef Eric Rocha shares, "This dish was inspired by my love of fishing. I wanted to create something that we have in our 'back yard'." He's certainly turned an ordinary fish into an amazing dish!

Southern Fried Maine Lobster Tail - This dish was also created for a wine-pairing dinner, but has become very popular (which comes as no surprise!) Very few people dislike lobster, and fried lobster is an art!

Paella - Hailing from Valencia, Spain, this dish is created with saffron, the most expensive spice in the world. It is a great family-style dish that's not just for seafood lovers. A prime choice for big parties that want to please everyone.

Sea Bass - A favorite of Chef Eric, Randy Peters Catering makes several iterations including Chilean Sea Bass, Citrus Glazed Sea Bass, and Miso-Seared Sea Bass!
