The World's Largest Steam Locomotive is Heading to Downtown Roseville!

Last Updated 7/8/2024Posted in News & Press

Next stop: Roseville for Union Pacific's famed Big Boy No. 4014! In this event sponsored in part by City of Roseville and Downtown Roseville Partnership, this very large train (a.k.a. the largest operating steam locomotive in the world) is visiting Downtown Roseville from Friday, July 12th to Saturday, July 13th as part of its Westward Bound Tour originating from Cheyenne, Wyoming!

Big Boy No.4014 has a rich history dating back to 1941. It was designed to haul heavy freight trains over mountain ranges. Only 25 of these "Big Boys" were ever built. It was retired in 1961, but Union Pacific reacquired it in 2013 and restored it to operating condition. It was returned to service in 2019 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's Completion. And now it is making its way to Roseville!

Visitors will have the opportunity to witness its mighty splendor from 9am - 3pm on both days. On July 13th, there will also be an additional event at Vernon Street Town Square filled with fun activities for the whole family. Downtown Roseville Merchants are also joining in on the fun with special offers
